NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Some parts of the Lowcountry got an early start to their Fourth of July festivities with fireworks displays lighting up the sky. One popular event in North Charleston, hosted by Northwoods Baptist Church, drew a large crowd on Sunday night, offering a fun, family-friendly celebration that was free to the public.

A Community Celebration

The Northwoods Baptist Church Fourth of July celebration has become a fan favorite over the years, attracting thousands of locals for a night of fun, food, and fireworks. People began arriving hours before the show, eager to grab the best seats for the annual event.

Before the fireworks began, the church offered free hot dogs and snow cones to the crowd. This community-focused event was open to all, regardless of background or religious affiliation.

“It’s open to the community, and the neighborhood and all, so everybody’s welcome,” said Francis Forbes, a community member. “There’s no way you can’t come or anything. Everybody is welcome, and you get to know new people and talk to them.”

A Celebration Beyond Fireworks

For many, the event was more than just about the fireworks. Dennis Doerr, a church member, shared that he was most excited about enjoying the hot dogs, catching up with friends, and spreading the word about God. He also noted that this celebration is a great example of people from all different faiths coming together to celebrate America’s independence.

“We have people from all kinds of religions here,” Doerr said. “I’m a Baptist, always have been, but there are people who are Roman and Lutherans, Catholics. You’ve got all different kinds. So here we have the freedom.”

This specific fireworks show has been a staple for over 25 years, growing year after year as more people gather to celebrate faith, freedom, and of course, fireworks.

Building Friendships and Making Memories

For Hunter Peeples, an attendee of the event, the excitement wasn’t just about the fireworks. “I’m most excited for just the friendships and being able to bond with everyone,” Peeples said. “Especially watching the fireworks, it only happens once a year, so you’ve got to enjoy it while you can.”
