Charleston, South Carolina – Erin Grimm’s 50th birthday celebration and trip turned out to be far from ordinary.
She discovered she was sick and had colon cancer.
What a difference a year makes. Grimm underwent surgery to remove half of her colon as well as other organs invaded by the tumor, including a portion of her stomach, pancreas, spleen, and gallbladder.
Her gastrointestinal tract was also repaired.
It was not easy. Cancer treatment is never easy. The treatment took about 10 hours.
Grimm also has a message for anyone who isn’t feeling right, like she was a year ago.
“I would highly recommend that if something does not feel right, leave right away. Do not delay, because I would have gone much sooner. When I first realized something wasn’t right, I could have avoided ending up in such dreadful circumstances,” she said.
Grimm, who is only days away from turning 51, is feeling much better and doing what she enjoys most: playing tennis.
She recently struck balls with the doctor who saved her life.
Grimm is back on the court approximately five days a week and says every time she goes out there, she is reminded of what she could have lost.
Grimm got immunotherapy for her colon cancer, and the scans indicate that she will remain in remission.
