Two Aiken men sentenced to two years in prison for scamming an 88-year-old woman through a will scheme

AIKEN, S.C. Two Aiken men were found guilty of conspiring to commit bank fraud and received two-year prison sentences.

The Office of the United States Department of Justice District of South Carolina reports that an 88-year-old woman in Aiken executed a will that allegedly left her entire estate, valued at about $20 million, to Thomas Allen Bateman, 51, of Aiken. As the personal representative, Cody Lee Anderson, 38, of Aiken, was named and was to receive $1 million.

Authorities claim that information gathered throughout the investigation, however, indicates that the woman lacked the mental competence to decide how best to dispose of her assets.

Both Bateman and Anderson received sentences of two years in prison and three years of court-mandated monitoring.
