Mount Pleasant, South Carolina — According to a complaint from municipal law enforcement, a Charleston Gold and Diamond Exchange employee is being investigated by the Mount Pleasant Police Department for allegedly stealing more than $20,000.
According to an incident report from the Mount Pleasant Police Department, the suspect—whose name has been redacted in the report—allegedly created fictitious purchase receipts for clients who weren’t present at the establishment, took cash out of the safe, and kept the money for himself.
Security cameras purportedly captured the accused employee carrying out the plan.
According to a police complaint, investigating officers subsequently examined every transaction, going back to June 10, 2024, and discovered that $22,735 had allegedly been stolen through the fraudulent receipt system.
On September 10, the employee allegedly confessed to stealing from the company when questioned about it. According to him, he took this action “because he was not actually stealing from customers, just a business.”
Allegedly, the acts are related to his denial of a promotion. Stealing, in the suspect’s opinion, was “fair compensation.” Officers tried calling the suspect, but no one answered.
The event is currently under investigation by Mount Pleasant Police.
