North Charleston Mayor Announces New Infrastructure Projects

North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess recently announced and celebrated major new infrastructure projects focused on transportation, recreation, and community development, marking a year of significant progress for the city.

Cosgrove Avenue Extension and Pedestrian Bridge

One of the biggest milestones is the opening of the Cosgrove Avenue extension and pedestrian bridge at the Navy Base Intermodal Facility. This project allows trains to move freely without disrupting local traffic and offers safer pedestrian access. The bridge provides a vital link to Riverfront Park, the redeveloped Navy Yard Charleston neighborhood, and the Navy Yard Industrial Campus. It features a 12-foot-wide, barrier-separated multi-use path for pedestrians. Mayor Burgess stated the new infrastructure improves mobility and connectivity while giving residents greater access to economic and recreational opportunities.

Chicora-Cherokee Recreation Center

SC Ports expects to finish a 15,000-square-foot community recreation center in North Charleston’s Chicora-Cherokee neighborhood this fall, underscoring efforts to mitigate impacts from the rail facility while supporting wellness for residents.

Union Heights Community Center Improvements

Groundbreaking has taken place for major upgrades to the Gethsemani Community Center in Union Heights, including a new full-size swimming pool and enhanced spaces for children’s activities. Mayor Burgess emphasizes these upgrades as vital for equity and safety, providing safe places for youth to gather and learn to swim in a community surrounded by rivers. Additional plans include a new senior center on Carner Avenue, another recreation facility, and a high school concept in the Cherokee area.

Commitment to Equity and Connectivity

Mayor Burgess has focused his administration on leveling the playing field through infrastructure investment, affordable housing, and programs that encourage business development and reduce crime. Collaborations with regional, state, and federal leaders have accelerated the pace of these improvements.

North Charleston’s infrastructure strategy reflects major investment in transportation safety, public spaces, and equitable neighborhood development, with more projects in the pipeline and visible action on long-promised community upgrades.
