Mount Pleasant Mayor Announces New Infrastructure Projects

Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie has recently announced several key infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the town’s quality of life, sustainability, and growth management. These projects reflect the town’s commitment to smart progress while balancing conservation and development needs.

Key Infrastructure Projects Announced

  3. GIS Hub Launch

  4. Shem Creek Sustainability Project and Grants
with nearly $24 million in grants secured, the projects include dredging near public and shrimp docks to support local fisheries and public access, alongside roadway improvements and dedicated bike, pedestrian, and transit infrastructure.
  5. Six Mile Transfer Facility Expansion
A $35 million expansion is underway to update the 30+-year-old yard debris transfer facility. This upgrade improves environmental compliance, operational efficiency, and provides expanded office and fleet maintenance space to serve the growing population.
  6. Recreation Improvements
The Carolina Park Recreation Complex and Memorial Waterfront Park are undergoing enhancements including new sports courts, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a long pier, enriching recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.
  7. Transportation Improvements
Major roadway projects focus on managing growth and traffic congestion. Highlights include:
  8. Completion of the $9.67 million Patriots Point Gateway with intersection improvements and added turn lanes
  9. Construction of All American Boulevard to improve traffic flow and neighborhood connectivity
  10. Upgrades to the Maritime Port District intersection to support economic development
  11. Multiuse path expansion on Hungryneck Boulevard to enhance corridor safety

Challenges with Drainage Project Funding

Mayor Haynie also addressed setbacks, such as the loss of $5.5 million in FEMA funding for the Edwards Park Drainage Project, critical to mitigating flooding in the Old Village. Despite this, the town has funded engineering and design work and set aside a local match to keep the project moving forward.

Overall, Mount Pleasant’s 2025 infrastructure agenda emphasizes sustainable growth, environmental stewardship, traffic mitigation, and quality of life improvements. Through strategic investment and community-focused planning, Mayor Haynie’s administration aims to maintain the town’s appeal as a vibrant place to live and work while addressing the challenges of rapid population growth.
