Mount Pleasant is fighting homelessness in 2025 through coordinated regional efforts, dedicated commissions, and policy action centered on rapid housing and support services.
Regional Rapid Housing Program
Mount Pleasant is part of the Lowcountry Rapid Housing Program, a multi-municipality initiative launched in 2025 to provide swift access to emergency housing and comprehensive support for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
The program is a “Housing First” model—placing people into safe, individual units with private beds and bathrooms, and then connecting them with wraparound services, including:
Identification assistance
Mental health and addiction counseling
Physical therapy
Job training and employment support
The rapid housing project is designed to be accessible via public transportation and shared among Charleston, North Charleston, Summerville, and Mount Pleasant. Area city councils are currently reviewing site plans and funding.
Mayors’ Commission on Homelessness and Affordable Housing
Mount Pleasant’s mayor appointed residents to the Mayors’ Commission on Homelessness and Affordable Housing, collaborating with local nonprofits and other mayors to:
Secure funding for housing and supportive services
Implement “Housing First” and prevention strategies
Guide citizens from homelessness to permanent, stable housing solutions
The commission works with the Palmetto Project and other organizations to coordinate outreach and resource allocation for those at risk.
Community Engagement and Planning
Mount Pleasant’s 2025 draft five-year comprehensive plan features expanded focus on affordable housing, resilience, and public feedback to ensure community-driven solutions against homelessness.
These developments show Mount Pleasant’s commitment to regional partnership, evidence-based housing solutions, and active public engagement to address homelessness in 2025.
