Florence Mayor Announces New Infrastructure Projects

The Florence mayor and city council recently announced a major infrastructure initiative comprised of three new master plans: Water Distribution System, Sewer Collection System, and Stormwater Master Plan. These plans, unanimously adopted on September 9, 2025, are designed to address critical challenges such as improving water quality, mitigating flooding, and preventing sewer overflow caused by aging infrastructure. Implementation is scheduled to begin in 2026, with an initial $3.47 million secured for stormwater mitigation efforts and collaboration with AECOM for planning. The initiative focuses on long-term sustainable upgrades over a 20-year period and prioritizes projects to address growing residential, commercial, and industrial needs, as well as community resiliency against flooding.

Key initial projects include replacing and upsizing water and sewer lines, rehabilitating groundwater facilities, expanding emergency storage, and enhancing stormwater management, especially in areas most affected by urban flooding. Specific attention is given to low- and moderate-income neighborhoods and arterial roads crucial for mobility and emergency access.

Additionally, Florence is investing millions into revitalization efforts in north Florence, emphasizing beautification and the development of affordable housing as part of a broader vision to enhance quality of life and support responsible growth throughout the city.
