Florence Health Department Releases New Guidelines

The Florence, SC Health Department has issued updated guidelines this October primarily in response to recent water system pressure issues, community health strategies, and seasonal safety initiatives.

Water Safety (Boil Water Advisory)

Due to recent flooding effects on the Pee Dee River, city officials have enacted a system-wide boil water advisory. Residents must boil water for at least one minute before drinking or cooking until further notice, due to possible risk of bacteriological contamination. Once water test results confirm safety, residents will be updated accordingly by city and state officials.

State Health Priorities

The South Carolina State Health Improvement Plan released this fall outlines new priorities for Florence and the broader region, focusing on chronic health conditions, behavioral health, maternal and infant wellbeing, and expanded access to nutritious foods and safe spaces for physical activity. Community partners are encouraged to follow evidence-based strategies aligned with these goals over the next five years.

Drug Safety Initiative

The Florence Police Department will host the DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 25, allowing residents to safely dispose of unused medications to reduce risk of overdose and prescription drug misuse. The event is open to the public and aims to improve community health and safety.

Important Reminders

Residents should continue following public health advisories, especially regarding current water safety protocols and upcoming public events like the prescription drug take-back day.

Community healthcare providers and authorities are prioritizing preventive measures for chronic disease and behavioral health while monitoring environmental risks this season.
