Charleston Mayor Announces New Infrastructure Projects

The Charleston mayor has announced several new infrastructure projects focusing on neighborhood revitalization, public safety, city parks, and major city-wide improvements. Key initiatives include:

Continued work by the Charleston Land Reuse Agency (CLRA) to revitalize neighborhoods with $600K funding over two years to build new homes and improve vacant lots.

Upgrades to Danner Meadow Park in Fort Hill, adding equipment, bathrooms, and parking.

Repairs to city parking garages at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center over the next five years.

A $1M Municipal Auditorium fund for structural assessment and future reimagining of this facility.

Progress on the Capital Connector Project to better utilize the riverfront as a river city.

Development of the LIFT Center, converting a former manufacturing plant into a 55,000 sq ft multi-use facility for workforce development, renewable energy, and a food hub.

Purchase of property for a new public safety center for the Charleston Police Department and renovation of fire stations.

Efforts to build a sports center to capitalize on the sports tourism industry.

Launch of new community engagement initiatives such as Hearts of our Neighborhoods and expansion of Charleston Walks outreach.

Alongside these, the city council approved advancing the Battery Extension project to protect the peninsula from flooding with a more walkable, community-friendly design. This project has secured $13.3 million in federal funds to move into the engineering and design phase.

Several projects are also underway or planned for better flood management, traffic flow improvements, and enhanced connectivity in the Charleston area.

These infrastructure efforts are part of a broader strategy to improve quality of life, promote economic growth, and create a more resilient, vibrant city under Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin’s leadership for 2025 and beyond.
