Anderson Health Department Releases New Guidelines

The Anderson County Health Department has released updated 2025 guidelines focusing on disease reporting, food safety, school immunizations, and environmental health compliance. These updates align with new directives from the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH).

Updated Disease Reporting Rules

Under the 2025 List of Reportable Conditions, healthcare providers, schools, and laboratories must adhere to stricter reporting timelines:

Immediate phone-call reporting is required for suspected outbreaks or diseases caused by novel pathogens or biothreats.

COVID-19 and influenza hospitalizations must now be submitted weekly through the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).

Lead blood levels of 3.5 µg/dL or greater must be reported within 7 days.

Tuberculosis, congenital syphilis, hepatitis B/C, and antibiotic-resistant infections are prioritized in the updated surveillance program.

Food Safety and Inspection Guidelines

The Anderson County Health Department reaffirmed its operational standards for all restaurants and food outlets. Facilities must maintain valid health permits and display visible inspection grades (A, B, or C). Food handlers and managers are required to complete certified training courses focused on preventing foodborne illness before receiving or renewing permits.

School Immunization and Exclusion Updates

For the 2025–2026 academic year, all childcare centers and public/private schools in Anderson County must follow the revised South Carolina Immunization Requirements. Students must present updated SC Certificates of Immunization, or approved medical or religious exemption forms, before attendance. The 2025 Exclusion List also cites that children with certain communicable diseases (e.g., whooping cough, chickenpox, or COVID-19) cannot attend school until cleared by a licensed provider.

Environmental and Community Health

The department continues weekly inspections and permit monitoring for stormwater controlrodent and vector management, and public sanitation projects under Anderson County’s environmental division. Construction and industrial sites remain subject to updated stormwater runoff regulations to ensure compliance with EPA Phase II standards.

Contact Information and Scheduling

Residents can access same-day appointments at the Anderson County Health Department headquarters (406 N. Murray Ave.) Monday through Friday. Services include immunizations, STD checks, diabetes management classes, and environmental complaints intake. The facility also offers extended hours on Thursdays until 6:30 PM.
