Social Security Payments for This Week

The first Social Security payment for August 2025 is set to be sent out this week. However, some recipients may see a reduction in their benefit checks due to overpayments made by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Overpayment Adjustments

The SSA is expected to begin withholding 50% of benefits from those who were overpaid and have not yet started making repayments. According to a report by the SSA’s Office of the Inspector General, $13.6 billion in overpayments were made between 2020 and 2023, mainly due to beneficiaries failing to report information that affected their benefits, such as additional earnings or changes in their medical conditions.
