A large brush fire burned in Cainhoy, South Carolina, on Wednesday around midday, with multiple agencies responding and the blaze eventually contained after burning over 900 acres.
Fire and emergency response
The fire started around 1:22 p.m., after an out‑of‑control controlled burn, and quickly spread through wooded and brushy areas. Charleston Fire Department and South Carolina Forestry, along with Berkeley County Emergency Management and other units, fought the fire using engines, bulldozers, and two air tankers to drop water.
The fire was declared contained around 5:10 p.m., though crews remained on site to monitor hot spots and smoldering areas.
Evacuations and safety
About 25 households along Blind Flight Street in the Point Hope Community were told to evacuate, and the evacuation recommendation was later lifted once the fire was contained.
Students at Phillip Simmons Elementary and Middle schools were evacuated out of after‑school programs and moved to Phillip Simmons High School, but no injuries were reported anywhere in the incident.
