Shoppers Support Goodwill Programs
Shoppers across the country marked National Thrift Shop Day by visiting resale stores, including Palmetto Goodwill locations in the Lowcountry. The holiday encourages consumers to shop secondhand not only to save money but also to support local programs that benefit the community.
In 2024, Palmetto Goodwill provided services to more than 11,000 individuals and helped over 4,000 community members secure sustainable employment. These services are funded by shoppers at 33 Goodwill retail stores across the region.
Programs Funded by Thrift Shop Purchases
Much of the funding raised supports initiatives such as the I-CAN program, which assists people reentering the workforce after incarceration, and other efforts providing job opportunities for people with disabilities.
Shopper Reactions
Many shoppers were unaware that it was National Thrift Shop Day, but they were happy to learn how their purchases contribute to the community. “It feels amazing. I didn’t even know today was National Thrift Day, and that makes it even better,” said shopper Hannah Homa. “The jobs and opportunities that Goodwill gives to people, I will shop here all day. It’s a win-win.”
Encouraging Donations and Secondhand Shopping
Palmetto Goodwill leaders emphasized that donations of gently used items are always appreciated and encouraged the community to shop secondhand, both to save money and help neighbors in need. Shoppers can find everything from name-brand clothing to unique, one-of-a-kind pieces, all while supporting Goodwill’s mission.
