The highly anticipated Flowertown Festival will be making its return to downtown Summerville this weekend, promising three days of festivities that are expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area.
Organized by the Summerville Family YMCA, this annual event is one of the Lowcountry’s largest festivals.
What to Expect
Over the weekend, Azalea Park will be transformed into a vibrant venue with more than 300 vendors offering food, crafts, and other goods, and around 200,000 visitors are expected to attend.
The festival will feature live entertainment, family-friendly activities, and a showcase of Summerville’s local businesses and attractions.
Planning and Preparations
Joe Debney, CEO of the Summerville Family YMCA, explained that planning for the festival is a year-round effort, beginning immediately after the previous year’s event. “As soon as we finish the end of last year’s festival, we’re right into the planning of this year’s festival,” he said.
Currently, crews are putting up signage and preparing Azalea Park for the big event. Debney mentioned that the festival’s scale continues to grow each year, with staff working behind the scenes to ensure everything is ready.
Public Safety Measures
The festival’s growing size also requires significant coordination between various town departments. Christopher Makowski, public information officer for the Town of Summerville, highlighted the importance of public safety during the event.
Local police and fire departments are already preparing for the expected influx of visitors.
Makowski emphasized that safety measures, including barriers and officer placement, will be set up starting Thursday before the festival begins.
Supporting the Community
Debney stressed that the festival is not just a fun event but also an important way to support the local community. Proceeds from the festival will be used to fund local programs, benefiting Summerville’s residents and businesses.
Makowski added that the event also provides a chance to showcase everything Summerville has to offer, including its incredible businesses, restaurants, and the strong sense of community that makes the town unique.
Logistics and Road Closures
As expected, the Flowertown Festival will lead to road closures and increased traffic in downtown Summerville throughout the weekend. Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and be prepared for some disruption as the town prepares for the event.
The Flowertown Festival runs from Friday to Sunday, making it a perfect weekend to explore Summerville and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of this cherished community event.
