The discovery of meth and a pistol during a traffic stop leads to two Berkeley County arrests

Berkeley County, South Carolina – Two males are facing charges after deputies found methamphetamine and a firearm during a traffic stop in the Jedburg area.

Steven Bruce Benton and Tyberius Ra Deas are accused of selling methamphetamine and possessing a weapon while committing a violent crime, according to authorities. Deas also faces a charge of avoiding arrest, and deputies say he has an outstanding warrant from the Summerville Police Department.

A deputy performed a traffic stop near Interstate 26 and Jedburg Road for malfunctioning equipment and an illegally displayed license plate, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said the passenger, identified as Deas, exited the vehicle and entered a neighboring store. When deputies approached the driver, named as Benton, they discovered an open container of alcohol inside the vehicle, according to the release.

During a probable cause search of the vehicle, deputies claim they discovered a firearm and roughly 15.2 grams of methamphetamine.

Additional deputies were dispatched to track down Deas, who is said to have fled. Deputies later received a call from a witness, which led to Deas’ arrest.

According to jail records, both males were booked into Hill-Finklea Detention Center on September 23. As of Tuesday morning, both were still in arrest.
