Charleston, South Carolina – The College of Charleston has announced that it will hold a third community meeting to present updates on the Coming Street Commons project, a new student housing program.
The meeting will be held on Monday, September 22, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the St. Julian Devine Community Center, located at 1 Cooper Street.
The college intends to publish updates and invite community members to visit tables hosted by officials from various aspects of the project. New student housing will be located just north of Calhoun Street, offering easy access to campus services. It complements the current housing at the 99 St. Philip St. residential hall.
The project includes the destruction of the historic former YWCA building, which was constructed in 1964. The former YWCA building is not just a historically significant landmark for the civil rights struggle, but it also rests on top of a potter’s field.
The College’s leaders believe that interaction is an important aspect of the project, with meetings set to solicit opinions and answer questions from citizens and stakeholders.
