Gen. Glenn Walters, USMC (Ret.), the 20th president of The Citadel, has announced his retirement after a distinguished 50-year career in public service. A 1979 graduate and former member of Charlie Company, Walters returned to lead his alma mater starting in 2018. He will step down at the end of the academic year in June 2026.
During his tenure, Walters oversaw significant campus improvements including construction of Basin Hall and Capers Hall, barracks repairs, a new roof on McAllister Field House, and upgraded turf at Johnson Hagood Stadium. He also led the college through the challenges of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining in-person instruction by fall 2020 without layoffs or furloughs.
The Citadel’s Board of Visitors has formed a committee to find his successor as they prepare for the transition. Walters expressed deep pride in mentoring ten outstanding cadet classes from 2019 through 2029 into principled national leaders.
