A new exhibit at The Charleston Museum is now open to the public, celebrating the life and legacy of Judge Richard E. Fields. Community members gathered Wednesday evening in Charleston for a night of reflection and remembrance as the museum officially launched “Beyond the Ashes: The Lowcountry’s New Beginnings.” The exhibit first opened in December and will remain on display through December 2026.

Community Leaders Reflect on Fields’ Impact

Among those honoring Fields was Richard Gergel, who emphasized the importance of sharing Fields’ story with the entire city. Attendees praised Fields not only for his groundbreaking achievements but also for his humility and devotion to his church, community, and Charleston as a whole. Friends and colleagues described him as deeply committed to public service and mentorship.

A Trailblazer Who Paved the Way

As the first Black municipal court judge since Reconstruction, Fields broke barriers and inspired generations in the Lowcountry. Charleston attorney Barry Baker recalled their close friendship and daily conversations, calling their relationship one of the most meaningful experiences of his life. The exhibit highlights Fields’ lasting influence and the new beginnings his leadership helped create across the region.
