Charleston, S.C. – Mr. Freddie, a beloved custodian, or “day porter,” at Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School, has become an inspiration to students, faculty, and staff alike. Known for his hard work and dedication, Mr. Freddie’s journey took a special turn when, a couple of weeks ago, he became an official American citizen—a milestone that has been celebrated by the entire school community.

From the Philippines to the American Dream

Mr. Freddie, originally from the Philippines, came to the U.S. eight years ago with little but a dream. His story is a testament to the American Dream, and it’s one that touches everyone around him.

“In my heart, America is my dream,” Mr. Freddie shared, reflecting on his journey. The principal of Ashley River Creative Arts, Timothy Sullivan, praised Mr. Freddie, saying, “Freddy is the epitome of the American dream.”

Mr. Freddie’s journey began at the age of 19 when he worked at a U.S. naval base in the Philippines, where he first dreamed of coming to America. Sullivan added, “He came to this country with not much eight years ago. He worked as hard as he could. He’s here every day. He works nights here as well. He owns his own home, owns his own car, and now he’s an American citizen.”

Hard Work and Humor

Mr. Freddie’s hard work doesn’t just stop at keeping the school in top shape. He goes above and beyond in unexpected ways. One memorable moment was when he handled a poisonous snake at the school. “I thought he’d come out with like an ax or a machete,” said Sullivan. Instead, Mr. Freddie calmly grabbed the snake, put it in a bag, and said, “I take it home and make some soup.”

His sense of humor and willingness to help reflect his selfless character, which has endeared him to everyone at the school.

Learning English Through Karaoke

Mr. Freddie’s path to mastering English is as unique as his story. He started learning English in the Philippines in an unconventional way: through karaoke. “Karaoke is our pastime when we are lonely,” Mr. Freddie explained. He even learned English by singing along to songs by Bon Jovi and Van Halen, among other artists. His passion for singing and his commitment to learning helped him overcome language barriers, and he continues to inspire others.

Family Support and Inspiration

Mr. Freddie’s sister, Rowena Isidro, who also works at the school, supported him throughout the immigration process. Like her brother, she is now a U.S. citizen, and both are living proof of the rewards that come from hard work and dedication.

“We didn’t imagine we were going to be in this country. I feel so overwhelmed and happy,” Rowena said. “He works hard to get something. He always goes above and beyond, reaching his dream to become a U.S. citizen.”

The siblings’ journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance, the American values of respect, and following the rules. Rowena offered this advice to others: “Just don’t give up.” Mr. Freddie echoed this sentiment, adding, “We need to pray to God to guide us and help us.”

Gratitude and Blessings

In reflecting on his journey, Mr. Freddie shared his gratitude for being able to take care of his family, including his 17-year-old son, with a job he loves. He said in the Philippines, it is challenging to find work after the age of 40, making his new life in America all the more significant.

For Mr. Freddie, being part of the Ashley River Creative Arts community has made him feel like family. His dedication, hard work, and positive attitude continue to make a lasting impact on those around him.
