Student athletes from Charleston are racing across South Carolina to pay tribute to their favorite coach.

Ten young men from the Charleston area, including Brian Johnson’s two sons, are running a 200-mile relay across South Carolina to honor the late coach and mentor. The event started Sunday at Furman University and ends Tuesday at Charleston Southern University, raising funds for the Mount Pleasant Track Club, Academic Magnet Boys’ Cross Country, and The Lonon Foundation.​

Coach Johnson’s Legacy

Brian Johnson, who passed away on March 31, 2025, at age 49 after a long illness, coached three local college programs and led Academic Magnet High School’s boys’ cross country and track teams for 10 years. He emphasized character, perseverance, and community beyond athletics, profoundly impacting students, athletes, and families.​

Relay Details

Organized by the Academic Magnet boys’ cross country team with former athletes, the tribute highlights Johnson’s kindness and motivational skills. His obituary noted his pride in coaching his sons and his dedication to the Charleston running community.
