SC Works Trident sponsors a job fair to help community members return the workforce

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – SC Works Trident is conducting a job fair to assist community individuals in taking their initial steps into the workforce.

The job fair is intended to allow people, particularly those facing difficulties such as limited education, housing challenges, or personal setbacks, the opportunity to explore alternative career possibilities and gain confidence as they reenter the job market.

While the event primarily serves alumni of the “Back-to-Work” program, it is available to anybody looking for work. Nine employers are taking part, including the College of Charleston, Home Care Plus, and Tri-County Link.

The “Back-to-Work” program is a nationally financed bootcamp-style training that helps participants improve their soft skills, gain confidence, and collaborate closely with mentors to prepare for employment. Participating in the job fair represents the completion of that training.

The employment fair gives specific career advice based on participants’ interests and opportunity to network directly with local employers. Many attendees will have the opportunity to interview on-site.

According to Marva Black, a consultant with the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, the fair bridges the gap between job seekers and employers.

“It gives them an opportunity then to, you know, express their interest in whatever particular career field it is that they are looking to go into,” Black told me. “Then if something develops as a result of the meeting with those employers initially…they are able to follow through with ongoing interviews to help them into the workforce.”

The next “Back-to-Work” intensive course starts in March. Thursday’s job fair will take place at 1930 Hanahan Rd. Suite 200 in North Charleston. Attendees are urged to dress properly and bring their résumé.
