Savannah and Charleston prepare for saltwater flooding, with road closures possible tonight

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Drivers along the South Carolina and Georgia coasts should brace for another round of flooding this evening as high tide pushes water inland. Charleston Harbor is expected to see moderate flooding, with water levels reaching up to 7.8 feet just after 9 p.m., increasing the risk of impassable roads in downtown Charleston.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, high tide is predicted to occur between 8:45 and 9:15 p.m. tonight, with moderate flooding likely in Colleton and Charleston counties. Minor flooding is expected in Savannah and Fort Pulaski, where water levels may rise to 9.6 feet by 9:10 p.m.

Flooding Risks and Precautions

Saltwater inundation could reach up to 1.5 feet in Charleston, and up to 1 foot in parts of Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, McIntosh, Beaufort, and Jasper counties. Low-lying streets and neighborhoods near tidal creeks will be most vulnerable, and drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads, particularly during the evening commute.

Safety Tips:

Move vehicles to higher ground if possible.

Avoid walking through floodwaters, which can be hazardous.

Stay updated on local advisories and road closures.

Flood advisories remain in effect through the evening, with the potential for more alerts if water levels rise beyond the forecasted levels. Residents are encouraged to remain cautious as conditions continue to evolve.
