Over the Christmas season, 11 people died on South Carolina roads.

Eleven people died on South Carolina roadways during the Christmas holiday travel period from December 24 to December 28, 2025, one fewer than the 12 fatalities recorded the previous year.

Safety Recommendations

Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway emphasized that crashes are preventable, noting that about half of traffic fatalities involve unbelted occupants. Drivers should buckle up all passengers, secure children in proper car seats, obey the hands-free cell phone law, stick to speed limits, and avoid impaired driving, especially during holiday celebrations.

Enforcement Plans

Law enforcement plans increased patrols from New Year’s Eve through January 4 to curb impaired driving and other risks. Ridgeway highlighted the dangers of alcohol during end-of-year events, urging intervention to prevent tragedies.

Local Traffic Fatalities

Charleston County reported 61 traffic deaths from January 1 through December 28, 2025, down slightly from 62 in 2024 and significantly from 75 in 2023. Statewide preliminary figures show varied county impacts, with Lancaster at 16 deaths in 2025 compared to 20 in 2024.
