New ambulance program will increase access to emergency care across the tri-county

Healthcare providers in North Charleston and Summerville are launching a new transport program aimed at improving how quickly patients can access advanced emergency care across the tri-county area.

New Transport Service Launches

Beginning Thursday, HCA Healthcare Trident and Summerville will roll out an interfacility transport service designed to move patients more efficiently between facilities.

The program includes four dedicated ambulances that will be stationed at the hospitals’ freestanding emergency rooms.

Faster Access to Advanced Care

Hospital officials say the service will allow patients who require a higher level of treatment to be transported quickly to Trident Hospital or Summerville Medical Center.

The goal is to reduce delays in care, particularly for patients who first arrive at freestanding emergency rooms but need more specialized services available at full-service hospitals.

Easing Pressure on EMS

Leaders say the program is also intended to reduce the burden on local county EMS agencies. By handling interfacility transfers internally, county EMS teams can remain available to respond to emergencies in the community.

The ambulances used in the program will be equipped with the same capabilities as county emergency vehicles.

Expanding Emergency Network

HCA Healthcare currently operates several freestanding emergency rooms in the Charleston region, including locations in Brighton Park, Centre Pointe, James Island, and Moncks Corner.

Additional sites are already in development, with new freestanding emergency rooms expected to open later this year on Johns Island and near Long Point Road. Plans are also underway for a future location in the Cane Bay area of Berkeley County.

Focus on Patient Outcomes

Medical leaders say rapid transport between facilities can be critical in emergency situations.

“Access to hospital-based emergency care is often lifesaving,” said Dr. Scott Hayes, an emergency medicine physician and medical director at Trident Hospital. “This program helps bridge the gap between initial evaluation at a freestanding ER and the specialized resources available at a full-service hospital.”

Program Rollout

The interfacility transport service will be operated by a dedicated medical transport team focused on safety, efficiency, and patient care.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday morning at Trident Hospital in North Charleston to mark the official launch of the program.
