A 28-year-old man is facing multiple charges after officers with the North Charleston Police Department spotted him Monday afternoon on University Boulevard near Nevonna Drive.
Police said the man was wanted for questioning in several auto break-in cases when officers approached him around 3 p.m. After providing his personal information, the suspect fled on foot, running across heavy traffic and causing drivers to brake suddenly to avoid hitting him. He then ran through a nearby neighborhood, cutting across residential yards before eventually surrendering.
Drugs and Outstanding Warrants Discovered
According to the report, the suspect told officers he ran because he had outstanding warrants and admitted to hiding drugs in his socks. Officers located two baggies containing a white rock-like substance that field-tested presumptively positive for cocaine.
A records check revealed an outstanding warrant with the Charleston Police Department for breaking and entering an automobile.
Multiple Charges Filed
Police identified the suspect as Preston Edward Shoaf. He was charged with four counts of breaking into auto fuel storage tanks, wearing a mask and the like, breach of peace, crossing other than at a crosswalk, financial transaction card fraud enhancements, possession of a controlled substance, and financial transaction card theft.
Shoaf was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
