Charleston, South Carolina – Therapy dogs at the Medical University of South Carolina have been blessed following the Blessing of the Therapy Dogs ceremony on Friday.
A large number of canines made their way to the horseshoe for the blessing and to commemorate the 20th anniversary of therapy dogs at MUSC.
The event commemorates the Feast of Saint Francis, the patron saint of animals.
Charleston Mayor William Cogswell declared October 3 to be the official day of “Blessing Therapy Dogs.”
During the occasion, dogs and volunteers were praised and honoured for their efforts.
The canines then prepared to be blessed by priests.
These therapy canines offer something unique to patients, young and old.
“They offer relief. They each provide compassion and empathy in their own manner. “Dogs have a way of convincing you that you can, that there is a purpose, and that you should keep trying,” said Cathy Bennett, MUSC Therapy Animal Program Coordinator.
The MUSC Paws Program includes more than 100 dogs.
