Moments to Teach: Handwritten or typed notes

I’m Dr. Rénard Harris from the College of Charleston, and I’m speaking with South Carolina Public Radio. This is Teachable Moments, a one-minute educational session for students and parents.

There is an ongoing debate about the best way for students to take notes in class. Some experts advocate for typing on a laptop, while others believe handwriting is preferable. According to research, when students take handwritten notes, they are actively trying to understand the information, whereas students who take notes on a laptop are more distracted.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each option. For example, a laptop can be more useful for students with learning disabilities who benefit from features such as auto-correct. Handwriting can be difficult for students who are unable to write quickly enough to retain the information. Taking good notes is essential, and the key is to determine which method works best for each individual.
