Lowcountry Land Trust selects a new president and CEO

The Lowcountry Land Trust, a well-known conservation nonprofit in South Carolina, has officially named Matt Williams as its new president and CEO. His appointment follows a six-month search to find the right leader to guide the organisation into its next phase of protecting the region’s natural beauty.

A New Chapter for Lowcountry Land Trust

Matt Williams will take over from Ashley Demosthenes, who served as president and CEO for the last 10 years. During the transition period, Sydney Cook, the nonprofit’s chief operating officer and general counsel, stepped in as interim CEO.

Williams takes the role at a time when the Lowcountry faces increased development pressure and a growing population. In a statement, he said, “The Lowcountry is growing rapidly, and much is at stake. I look forward to working with our staff, partners, and supporters to speed up land protection so future generations can enjoy the beauty of this region.”

Williams’ Strong Conservation Background

Matt Williams brings a wealth of experience in conservation work:

He was Associate Director of Philanthropy at The Nature Conservancy’s South Carolina chapter, where he helped secure funding for major land protection efforts, including the Chelsea Plantation project.

He also held leadership positions at the International Conservation Caucus Foundation and The Explorers Club, focusing on conservation policy, research, and exploration.

His career has centered on connecting people, policy, and funding to support long-term environmental goals.

Strong Support from the Conservation Community

While The Nature Conservancy expressed sadness over Williams’ departure, they praised his move to Lowcountry Land Trust. Dale Threatt-Taylor, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy in South Carolina, said, “We know that conservation is a shared mission. Having Matt at the helm will strengthen the collective work we’re doing to protect South Carolina’s natural resources.”

Vision for the Future

Starting September 15, Williams will lead efforts from the Lowcountry Center for Conservation and the upcoming Angel Oak Preserve. He’ll also focus on expanding community-owned lands in historic neighborhoods, helping residents become direct stewards of the land in their areas.

Bob Perry, Chair of the Lowcountry Land Trust Board of Trustees, shared high hopes for the new CEO: “Matt brings exceptional philanthropic experience and an inspiring vision for the future of conservation in our region. He stood out among an impressive group of candidates for his deep conservation knowledge and partnership-building skills.”

What Lies Ahead

With nearly four decades of conservation success behind it, the Lowcountry Land Trust is preparing for its future under Williams’ leadership. His focus on community engagement, funding, and strategic growth is expected to guide the organisation through the region’s environmental challenges while continuing to protect the landscapes that define the Lowcountry.
