North Charleston, South Carolina – The Lowcountry Food Bank conducted its fifth annual ‘Walk to Fight Hunger’ event, which drew hundreds of participants. The two-mile walk aims to raise awareness about food insecurity.

“Our community comes together every year for the annual walk to fight hunger, but our communities also participate every day of the year.” I mean, we don’t do this every year. “Our community supports our work, and without it, we couldn’t do what we do,” Food Bank President and CEO Nick Osborne stated.

Hundreds of people laced up their exercise sneakers at Wannamaker Park’s Tupelo Shelter. The event started at 10:30 a.m., with the race beginning at noon. It was supposed to run around three hours in all, ending at 1:30 p.m. Shelby Roberts of Live 5 News hosted the community event.

Riley Covell was with a group of high school students representing their National Honor Society and learning about the importance of fighting food insecurity.

“This is my first year going, but I think I’ll come back next year because it’s really fun and cool to represent this cause, see what happens, and raise awareness,” Riley Covell, Stratford High School, NHS, and walk participant, said.

Tents featuring resources from partnered organizations surrounded the park, offering helpful resources and activities such as face painting, a scavenger hunt, refreshments, and music. According to event organizers, approximately 200 individuals are scheduled to participate in the walk.
