Lowcountry food bank assists federal workers amid government shutdown

AMONCKS CORNER, South Carolina – As the government shutdown continues, a Moncks Corner woman has teamed up with the VFW Post 9509 and Auxiliary to support federal workers by opening a food pantry.

The “Be The Light Pantry” formed to assist furloughed federal employees and their families. The shutdown affects approximately 25,000 state government workers.

The pantry, located in the VFW Post 9050 & Auxiliary at 1141 South Live Oak Drive near Trident Tech’s Berkeley campus in Moncks Corner, serves families from Charleston, Berkeley, and nearby counties.

Stacey Benson, who founded the pantry, said they are collecting non-perishable home products that are necessary for families.

She claims that the pantry’s mission is to relieve individuals of the burden of food and allow them to focus on other expenses.

“And during on the days of the pantry, it would be amazing if we had some fresh fruits and vegetables, bread products, that sort of thing to be able to offer families coming through,” Benson said me. “Obviously, we need canned products, and so on. Anything that would help fill a stomach.”

The pantry will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The pantry also accepts monetary donations through Towns 4 Troops SE.
