CHARLESTON, S.C. — Throughout the month of April, Park Circle’s popular dining destination, Katsubo, will donate $1 from every frozen lemonade sold to the Michael W. Leibowitz Family Fund.
This fund supports student pilot scholarships at Charleston Southern University in memory of Michael W. Leibowitz, a beloved father, mentor, and one of Charleston’s most dedicated philanthropists.
A Legacy of Service and Passion for Aviation
The Charleston community faced a heartbreaking loss in 2024 with the tragic passing of Michael W. Leibowitz in a plane crash. For over 50 years, aviation was not just a hobby for Leibowitz — it was a calling.
He was deeply committed to pilot education, using his flying skills to serve others, including volunteering for medical and animal transport missions. One of his most meaningful contributions was flying cancer patients to their treatments, often lightening the mood with his signature humor.
Leibowitz’s generosity extended beyond aviation. He supported numerous charitable causes, often through his work and involvement in local races and events. His life was guided by the motto, “If I can do it, so can you”, a phrase that continues to inspire all who knew him.
Continuing Michael’s Legacy
Leibowitz’s daughter, Abby Leibowitz, co-owner of Katsubo, shares that the fundraiser reflects what her father would have wanted. “We are remembering my dad by doing what he would have done — investing in the next generation of pilots,” said Abby.
“He believed that aviation education and safety go hand in hand, and this scholarship is a way to carry that forward.”
