Lowcountry Land Trust has secured a permanent conservation easement on the six-acre Holmes Tract on Johns Island, South Carolina, linking it to a 96-acre protected corridor along Plow Ground Road. This donation by the Holmes family safeguards three acres of forested wetlands draining into Bohicket Creek, boosting water quality and ecosystem health.
Conservation Benefits
The tract preserves rural character, reinforces Charleston County’s Urban Growth Boundary to curb sprawl, and reduces congestion while enhancing environmental resilience. Three landowners have now collaborated with the nonprofit on this growing greenbelt.
Project Support
Donnelley Foundation funding covered due diligence, highlighting public-private partnerships. Chief Conservation Officer Kate Parks Schaefer praised Mr. Holmes’ legacy for future generations.
