James Island vegetation fire is extinguished by fire and harbour patrol teams.

On Wednesday, Charleston Fire Department crews, along with the Charleston Police Department’s Harbor Patrol, responded to a vegetation fire on James Island. The teams worked together to control the fire, which was burning near Turns Nest Road. Thanks to quick action, they were able to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby properties.

Firefighting Efforts

To access the fire, which was located outside the main roads, the Charleston Police Department’s Harbor Patrol used their airboat. The team brought along portable fire pumps and equipment to assist in extinguishing the flames. When they arrived, they found about one to two acres of land burning, with smoldering debris scattered across the area. Officials suspect the fire may have started at a nearby campsite.

No Immediate Threat to Life or Property

Fortunately, the fire did not pose a threat to life or surrounding properties. Crews worked diligently to dampen large spots and handle the smoldering areas to prevent further spread. However, officials warned that there might be minor flare-ups in the coming days as some areas continue to burn.

Public Safety Reminder

Residents are advised to avoid the area to ensure their safety and to allow the teams to continue their work without interference. Officials also reminded the public not to attempt to put out the fire themselves.

The combined efforts of the Charleston Fire Department and the Police Department’s Harbor Patrol helped to quickly contain the vegetation fire on James Island. While the fire is under control, residents are encouraged to stay clear of the area as crews continue to monitor and manage any remaining hotspots.
