James Island town hall draws a crowd as council candidates address serious local issues.

James Island, South Carolina — On Monday, dozens of James Island residents attended a town hall to speak with the four candidates standing for two town council seats.
It was a full room on a Monday night, with scarcely any seats available. Attendees listened intently as the candidates discussed the most critical challenges in their neighborhood.

“This isn’t only where we live. “This is home,” Julia Drayton Crumblin, one of the contenders, stated.

At the event, all of the candidates were able to provide opening and closing comments, as well as respond to questions from the moderator. After each question, the candidates were given the opportunity to rebut. The questions were created by the Local League of Women Voters and James Island locals.

During the town hall, candidates were questioned about their objectives, the function of the town council, collaboration, infrastructure resilience, voter representation, flooding challenges, and worries about tree cutting near power lines.

“I want my grandkids, their grandkids, and future grandkids to enjoy the creeks, marsh, trees, cany, and wildlife as much as I do,” candidate Michael Williams stated.

The contenders all stressed their passion for James Island and presented what they see as the most critical issue.

“You have the same standing as any elected official. You are the individuals we serve. You are not serving us. “We’re serving you,” candidate Meredith Poston stated.

According to Jeri Cabot, co-president of the League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area, while these local elections may not have as high a participation as national elections, they may have a greater impact on your daily life.

“This municipal zoning decision was related to the apartment complex that is being built on this street. This drainage area selection was made in response to the lack of flooding on a certain road,” Cabot explained.

The candidates running for the two open seats on the Town of James Island Town Council are listed below:

Julia Drayton Crumblin
Stanley T. Kozikowski
Kristen Meredith Poston
Michael O’Shaughnessy Williams
