"It was a miracle": Bystanders save Uber driver from sinking car on Isle of Palms

A regular Uber ride turned into a life-or-death moment last weekend in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, when an Uber driver accidentally drove straight into the marina during heavy rain. Thanks to the courage of two bystanders, the driver survived a terrifying situation—and the three men now share an unbreakable bond.

How a Normal Uber Ride Took a Dangerous Turn

Peter Guisti, an Uber driver, was on his last ride of the night during intense rainfall when the unexpected happened. With heavy rain pouring down, no proper signage, and no streetlights, Guisti mistakenly drove off the edge of the parking area and straight into deep water at the marina.

“It felt like I went off a table,” Guisti said. “Seconds later, water was already filling the car.”

As water rushed in through the open windows, Guisti knew he was in serious trouble. But just when he thought it might be too late, help arrived from two unexpected heroes.

Two Bystanders Turned Lifesavers

Robert Heaton and Brandon Blackwell, who were dining at the nearby restaurant Islander 71, didn’t hesitate when they saw what was happening. Heaton, who had been watching Guisti’s car from a distance, acted immediately once he saw the vehicle sink.

“It was pouring rain, with strong winds. I saw his car go under and knew I had to help,” Heaton shared.

Without thinking twice, Heaton jumped into the eight-foot-deep water and helped pull Guisti from the sinking car. He described it as a moment of divine intervention, saying he even prayed for the seatbelt to come loose—and, as if by miracle, it did.

A Ride He Regrets, A Life Saved

Guisti said he chose to take one last ride that night, knowing other Uber drivers might avoid the area due to the harsh weather. In hindsight, he wishes he had headed home—but is now grateful for the chance to be alive and thank the two men who saved him.

The incident left a strong emotional impact on all three. Since then, Guisti, Heaton, and Blackwell have built a friendship. They’ve made plans for dinner and continue to stay in touch. Heaton has even been helping Guisti financially to get back on the road and restart his work as an Uber driver.

Calls for Better Safety Measures

This wasn’t the first time something like this has happened at the Isle of Palms marina, according to locals. Guisti hopes the city will now take action to improve safety, such as installing signs and better lighting, to prevent future accidents.

Live 5 News reached out to the City of Isle of Palms to ask about any planned changes, but they have not yet responded.

What could’ve been a tragedy turned into a story of bravery, kindness, and the power of human connection. Thanks to the quick-thinking actions of two strangers, Peter Guisti lived to see another day. Now bonded by an unforgettable night, their story is a reminder that even in the darkest moments, heroes can emerge—and miracles can happen.
