A South Carolina family, the Schulzes, survived a dramatic crash on January 10, 2026, after colliding with seven loose cows on S.C. 22 in Horry County’s Aynor area. All family members escaped serious injury despite their vehicle being totaled, while the seven cows died on impact. Reports confirm eight cows total were killed in related incidents that day, with six more rounded up later by owners and Horry County Animal Control.
Incident Details
The Schulzes were driving from Myrtle Beach to Marion around 65-68 mph when the black Angus cattle crossed the highway between U.S. 501 and S.C. 319. Their 14-year-old son was also aboard; the husband braked hard but couldn’t avoid the 400-500-pound animals. Police had noted loose cows earlier, posting warnings on Facebook at 10:39 p.m., though signage appeared post-crash, prompting questions about prior notification after the first incident.
Response and Aftermath
Horry County Police and Animal Control assisted in capturing remaining cows, with the situation under investigation to determine ownership and escape origin. The highway shut down briefly for cleanup and rescue. The family now awaits insurance for their new, undrivable vehicle.
