Democratic state Rep. Jermaine Johnson, a former player for the College of Charleston basketball team, planned to meet voters Friday during a meet-and-greet at Great Saint Luke AME Church as he ramps up his campaign for governor. Johnson said his approach centers on connecting directly with residents and “meeting them where they’re at,” emphasizing priorities such as improving schools, roads and healthcare.
Johnson Discusses Voter Participation and Immigration Enforcement
The District 52 representative argued that South Carolina’s political identity is shaped by turnout, saying he does not view it strictly as a red state but rather as one where many residents have disengaged from voting.
On immigration enforcement, Johnson said he would seek cooperation with law enforcement but criticized current U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in the state. He said he would prefer greater collaboration and communication between federal authorities and state and local officials, referencing concerns about federal actions in Columbia.
Abortion Rights and Gun Laws Among Key Issues
Johnson also addressed abortion rights, saying women should be at the forefront of the issue and criticizing what he described as male-led legislative efforts to restrict reproductive rights.
Another major focus of his platform is raising the legal age to purchase a firearm. Johnson said he supports responsible gun ownership but expressed concern about allowing 18-year-olds to purchase guns, citing brain development and the potential for impulsive decisions.
