An arrest has been made in connection with a shooting that took place Feb. 1 at the Gates of Summerville apartments, according to the Summerville Police Department.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire at the complex and found a male victim outside an apartment suffering from two gunshot wounds, one to the neck and another to the shoulder. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Investigation Identifies Suspect
Investigators interviewed a female witness who told police she lived with the victim and had previously been in a relationship with him. She also stated she had recently ended a relationship with the suspect, who allegedly arrived at the apartment unannounced to retrieve his belongings.
According to arrest affidavits, there was no physical or verbal altercation before the victim was shot, and the suspect fled the scene afterward.
Following an investigation, 20-year-old Jonas Canty Jr. of Summerville was identified as the suspect. He was located in Orangeburg County and arrested Feb. 23 without incident with assistance from the United States Marshals Service Task Force.
Charges and Bond Revocation
Canty is charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was transported to a local detention center, and a judge revoked his bond Tuesday.
Police encourage anyone with additional information about the incident to contact the Summerville Police Department.
