Spartanburg County, South Carolina A former sheriff has apologized for his acts after pleading guilty to federal counts of wire fraud, obtaining controlled medications by deception, and conspiracy to commit theft involving federally funded programs.
Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright faces up to 20 years in jail and significant fines for his offenses.
The charging documents from the US Attorney’s Office state that Wright “abused his position as elected Sheriff… to siphon money from Spartanburg County.”
According to court filings, Wright used his county-issued credit card to make personal purchases at over 100 restaurants and retailers.
The documents show that Wright used this county-issued card to purchase 92 packs of cigarettes at Dollar General. He also allegedly spent over $1,300 in the Apple App Store on games such as Huntwise, Ramp Car Jumping, and Royal Match.
Wright also made purchases via Sirius XM, according to ethics commission filings.
The majority of the alleged misspend was toward meals, totaling more than $5,000. Wright allegedly spent over $900 at Fuddruckers, $345 at Chick-fil-A, and $281 at Super King Buffet, according to the records.
Wright spent an additional $946 at Best Buy, where he purchased an iPad and other stuff. He also paid $210 in credit card fees and $71 at CVS for an at-home drug test kit.
Investigators claim Wright also stole money from the agency’s Benevolence Fund and used it to buy painkillers.
During the plea hearing, Wright discussed his opioid addiction and how he had a heart attack earlier this year.
According to Wright’s attorney, the former sheriff “broke the sacred trust the people of Spartanburg County placed in me.” I do not have the words to express my regrets, apologies, and regret.
He also stated that he makes “no excuses” for his acts and accepts “full responsibility.”
