East Cooper Meals on Wheels celebrates 40 years of service with a new name

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — East Cooper Meals on Wheels is celebrating over four decades of providing meals and companionship to those in need across Charleston County. The organization, which delivers approximately 300 meals daily, recently honored its dedicated volunteers with a special luncheon, but leaders say the true reward lies in the work itself.

“It’s very gratifying. Giving back to the community is important because clients become family,” said Scott Labarowski, a longtime volunteer.

A Legacy of Care

Founded in the early 1980s by Cheryl Steadman, Meals on Wheels started with just 10 volunteers. Today, it has grown to more than 300 volunteers, and the need for support remains significant. Steadman pointed out that many people don’t realize the extent of the hunger in the community.

“There’s a lot of hungry people, and it’s not just for the poor. If you’re sick and need help, we’re here,” she said.

A New Identity and Expanded Mission

This year, the organization unveiled its new name and slogan: Meals on Wheels Feeding Friends, Five Communities, One Table. The updated message reflects the organization’s expanded mission to serve Mount Pleasant, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Daniel Island, and Clements Ferry, emphasizing the unity and shared nourishment across these communities.

More Than Just Meals

For volunteers, the most rewarding aspect of their work isn’t just delivering meals—it’s building relationships with the recipients.

“The most rewarding thing is a note at the end of the day when someone thanks you for the smiles,” Labarowski shared. “To provide that meal is the ability to give back.”

Looking to the Future

While East Cooper Meals on Wheels continues to rely on its volunteers, the organization is also emphasizing the importance of donations to ensure its mission remains strong. With the rising need for meals and support, both financial contributions and volunteer time are crucial to keeping the service going.

If you’d like to learn more or get involved, East Cooper Meals on Wheels welcomes both new volunteers and donations to help sustain their vital work in the community.
