Buddhist monks from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Fort Worth, Texas, are on a 2,300-mile “Walk for Peace” to Washington, D.C., promoting compassion and mindfulness amid national division. Their rescue dog Aloka, a beloved symbol of the journey, recently underwent TPLO surgery at Charleston Veterinary Referral Clinic for a cranial cruciate ligament tear after limping in Lexington, S.C.

Journey Background

The walk began October 26, 2025, led by Bhikkhu Pannakara, with nearly two dozen barefoot monks passing through multiple states, including recent South Carolina stops like Columbia. Now down to 18 monks after a vehicle accident, the group has gained millions of social media followers sharing their non-political message of peace.

Aloka’s Treatment

Aloka’s prior injuries, possibly worsened by miles walked, led to surgery on January 12, 2026, fully covered by the clinic as an honor. Recovery involves two weeks of rest, then two months for bone healing before the monks decide his rejoining.

Future Plans

The pilgrimage targets a February 2026 D.C. arrival to petition for Vesak as a federal holiday, emphasizing unity over politics. Aloka’s role post-recovery remains up to the monks, balancing his health with the ongoing trek.
