Driver attempting to escape Police in South Carolina said a cop was killed after he crashed into a brick wall

A 22‑year‑old Greenville man, David Hernandez, was killed early Sunday morning when the car he was driving crashed while trying to avoid a police stop in Greenville County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and local reports. The single‑vehicle wreck happened about 5 a.m. on North Main Street in Greenville, near the intersection with Kenwood Lane.

How the crash happened

Hernandez was driving a 2013 Nissan sedan north on North Main Street when he tried to evade law enforcement after Greenville Police tried to stop the car for allegedly driving recklessly. Instead of complying, he continued on, and officers later said they did not initiate a formal pursuit because of his erratic driving behavior. Near Kenwood Lane, the Nissan veered off the right side of the road and slammed into a brick wall, killing Hernandez at the scene; no other injuries were reported. It is not yet clear whether he was wearing a seatbelt.

Investigation and broader road‑safety context

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash itself, while what led up to the incident—such as why officers tried to stop the car—is being handled separately by Greenville Police. State data show that road‑traffic deaths remain high in South Carolina: at least 173 people had died on state roads by March 29, 2026, and 914 died in crashes across the state in 2025. In Greenville County alone, at least 17 people have died in crashes this year, compared with 48 fatal wrecks in 2025.
