DA convicts North Carolina guy of reselling heavy machinery and committing fraud against Helene victims.

Noah Daniel Garrett, 28, from Conover, N.C., faces 8-11 years in prison after pleading guilty to over 20 felony property crimes spanning Catawba, Avery, Mitchell, Iredell, and Gaston counties from October 2023 to March 2025. Superior Court Judge Sherri W. Elliott sentenced him following the plea.

Offenses and Tactics
Garrett’s scheme involved stealing heavy machinery, fraudulently reselling it, and exploiting Hurricane Helene victims through false pretenses. Charges include felony obtain property by false pretense over $100,000, 16 counts of obtaining property by false pretense, three felony conversions, two felony larcenies, felony conspiracy, and felony possession of stolen goods.

Additional Penalties
He must pay nearly $265,000 in restitution to affected businesses and individuals, some jointly with co-defendant Virgil Garrett, his father, who also faced charges. Multiple county agencies investigated the multi-jurisdictional crimes.
