Charleston, South Carolina – The City of Charleston is bracing for tidal flooding on Thursday and Friday as a coastal low pressure system mixes with seasonal high tides.
According to city officials, high tides will create flooding in low-lying regions, with the worst expected on Thursday and Friday morning. Flooding is anticipated to affect sensitive neighborhoods and the morning commute.
Tide Schedule and Expected Level
Thursday: 10.06 a.m., 8.0 ft; 10.31 p.m., 7.6 ft.
Friday: 11:02 a.m., 8.5 feet; 11:28 p.m., 7.0 feet.
City crews are emptying storm drains and ditches in flood-prone regions ahead of time. Barricades are also being placed for any traffic closures, and two of the city’s garages will provide free overnight parking to safeguard automobiles from flooding.
Officials said the Charleston Tech Center Garage at 997 Morrison Drive and 99 WestEdge Garage will be open for free parking from Thursday at 7 a.m. until Friday at 4 p.m.
“When exiting the garage, hit the call button and inform the operator that you are taking advantage of free storm parking. “Avoid ground-level parking, as lower levels of some garages may absorb water during peak tides,” the city advised.
Officials advise residents and visitors not to drive or walk through flooded areas, and to keep cars away from low-lying areas and storm drains.
