Charleston, South Carolina — According to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, a man was detained for driving under the influence on Monday after allegedly striking multiple utilities and an unoccupied vehicle.
Henry Jones, a 45-year-old Charleston man, was detained and charged with first-time DUI and leaving the scene of an accident with an unattended car.
According to the deputies’ report, they were initially summoned to 128 Wappoo Road by Charleston Police Department officers on the scene in response to a reported traffic collision in which a witness saw the driver flee on foot.
According to the report, Charleston Police were directed to the crash site, and after examining the scene, they continued down Wappoo Road until they encountered Jones, who was walking back towards the scene.
Deputies responded on the site and interrogated Jones, who indicated that he was unwilling to provide any information other than that he had struck a vehicle parked in a parking lot on Wappoo Road.
During the questioning, deputies noted that Jones’ breath smelled of alcohol, and the damage to his truck was significantly greater than the damage he caused to the other vehicle he hit. This led deputies to assume Jones had perhaps struck more objects.
Investigators discovered that Jones had struck a road sign, a pole with an electrical box, and an unoccupied vehicle.
Jones was transported to MUSC for jail clearance and housed in the detention center without additional incident.
