Charleston, South Carolina – A nonprofit violence intervention program based at the Medical University of South Carolina will receive a $100,000 grant to help fund its hospital-based program.

Everytown Community Safety Fund gave a grant to the Turning the Tide Violence Intervention Program, allowing the program to continue its work at MUSC for two years.

Turning the Tide engages MUSC patients who have been injured by violence by providing bedside assistance, referrals, wraparound programs, and long-term follow-up for those at risk.

The team specializes in individuals aged 12 to 30 who are at danger or have experienced interpersonal and community violence, but it will also serve other patients in need.

Turning the Tide primarily serves the Lowcountry counties of Charleston, Beaufort, Colleton, Dorchester, and Berkeley.

According to Everytown Community Safety Fund data, cities that have engaged in initiatives such as Turning the Tide are experiencing fewer gun homicides.

“Our team meets survivors at their most vulnerable moments and walks alongside them through recovery,” said Christa Green, program director at MUSC’s Turning the Tide Violence Intervention Program. “This grant ensures that Charleston families will continue to receive the care and support they need.”

Turning the Tide has been serving patients since its launch in July 2021.
