Charleston County, South Carolina – The contract for Charleston County School District Superintendent Anita Huggins has been extended until 2031.
The district’s Board of Trustees voted 8-1 in favor of extending Huggins’ contract from June 30, 2027, to June 30, 2031. According to the district, the lone dissenting vote came from board member Darlene Roberson.
Huggins obtained a ‘exemplary evaluation,’ with a rating of 30.89 out of a possible 33 points, prompting the decision.
According to district officials, the evaluation demonstrated ongoing advances in student achievement, solid fiscal stewardship, and enhanced community trust.
“Under Ms. Huggins’ leadership, Charleston County School District is moving in the right direction,” said Board Chair Pam McKinney. “Her dedication to improving student outcomes, assisting teachers, and functioning transparently has resulted in a foundation of trust and measurable improvement. The Board’s unanimous vote underscores our belief in her vision and the momentum we are seeing in our schools.”
“I’m deeply appreciative of the Board’s confidence and support,” Huggins told reporters. “This extension highlights the collaborative efforts of our teachers, leaders, and staff who strive to do what is best for students every day. I’m happy of how far we’ve come and much more determined to build on our achievements in the next years.”
Huggins was named as the district’s head in 2023 and has worked for the district for over 25 years in numerous capacities, including teacher, principal, deputy superintendent, and executive director of educational performance.
During her time, the district has earned its highest-ever SC READY scores, a record College and Career Readiness rate, and significant gains in school report card ratings at all grade levels, according to a news release issued Tuesday.
