AUGUSTA, Georgia – Augusta Utilities expects the towpath between the Augusta Canal’s Headgates and the Raw Water Pumping Station to stay blocked until at least 2026.

Hurricane Helene caused extensive damage to the area, prompting the closure of the towpath.

Since then, design work for the repair plans has been ongoing.

Augusta Utilities’ current timeline is for repairs to begin in January 2026, with the objective of reopening this portion of the towpath in the spring of that year.

According to the agency, the canal waterway remains available for paddling from the Headgates to the 13th Street Gate structure.
