Young twin brothers Chief Holden Neal and Assistant Chief Logan Neal have successfully revived the struggling Antioch Volunteer Fire Department in Blacksburg, South Carolina.
Department Turnaround
When the brothers took over at age 21, the department had only five firefighters, leading to missed calls due to their full-time jobs. They recruited community members and friends, including uncertified individuals whom they trained, growing membership to 30 within six months.
Overcoming Doubts
Initial skepticism about their youth was countered by support from neighboring departments like Cleveland County and Grover, N.C. Since their leadership began, the department has answered every call without missing any.
Community Impact
The Neals emphasize community recruitment and now assist other agencies facing volunteer shortages. Their goal is ensuring every community has its own fire department, addressing the nationwide decline in volunteer firefighters.
